After working through this guide, you'll be using Perplexity to get current, cited market pricing for construction materials in minutes: a fast sanity check against RS Means data and a replacement for 30-minute vendor call sessions when you need a ballpark quickly.

What you should see: A search interface similar to Google, but with a Focus/mode selector. The Pro version gives you access to more recent data sources.
In the search bar, type a specific material pricing question. The more specific you are, the more useful the answer:

Perplexity provides an answer with numbered citations. Review:
Click any numbered citation to verify the source directly.
After getting a current price, ask a follow-up in the same conversation:
This gives you context for escalation factors on projects bidding for future start dates.
Copy the answer and sources into your bid notes or estimating workbook. Note the date, since pricing data is only valid for a few weeks on volatile commodities.
Structural steel: "Current market price per ton for structural steel wide flange sections, [region] US, [current quarter year]. Include tariff impact if any."
Concrete: "Current ready-mix concrete pricing per CY in [city/region] for commercial construction. Any recent price movements?"
Copper/MEP: "Current copper pipe and fittings pricing trends for commercial construction in the US. How has pricing moved in the last 6 months?"
Lumber: "Current lumber pricing for commercial framing applications: OSB, LVL, dimensional lumber. US market, current quarter."
Escalation check: "What is the current construction cost escalation forecast for [building type] projects starting [month year] in [region]? Reference Turner Building Cost Index or similar."
